Start with wheel balance and tyre condition — that is the answer most of the time and it is the cheapest to check. If a fresh balance does not cure it, look at worn drop links, anti-roll bar bushes and, in particular, the inner CV joint on the driveshaft, which is a recognised cause of a steady wobble that appears at motorway speed and nowhere else. The wheel itself is almost never the fault.

It is specialist work rather than a straight swap: the module has to match the car, the clockspring is usually disturbed and the system needs coding and the fault clearing afterwards. It is mechanically simple and electrically not. The airbag circuit stays live until the battery has been disconnected for at least ten minutes, the module must be carried face-up and never dropped, and the clockspring has to be centred correctly before the wheel goes back or it will tear the first time you turn onto full lock. Warped or unevenly worn front discs, in almost every case. Traffic driving heat-cycles the discs repeatedly, and the C3, Xsara and C5 Aircross fronts are where we see it most. Have the disc thickness and runout measured rather than guessed — sometimes a skim on the lathe cures it, and where the discs are near minimum, a fresh pair is the answer.
