The power-fold motor inside the housing is the usual failure, and it shows up most on the C5 Aircross, C3 Aircross and C3. Occasionally the fault is not mechanical at all — the BSI loses its stored position for the mirror and refuses to drive it. A scan will tell you which before anyone strips a door card, and the second case sometimes clears with a reset rather than a part.

Yes, and you usually should if the housing is undamaged. The glass clips onto a backing plate and is sold separately for most C3, Xsara, C3 Aircross and C5 models. Heated glass costs roughly double the plain version and is worth it here for winter mornings and coastal mist. Warm the old glass gently before levering it off — cold, it shatters and you end up picking fragments out of the housing.

With the ignition on, cycle the fold switch three times within about ten seconds, then operate it normally — that re-teaches the end positions on most models. If it does not take, the motor has jammed part-way through its travel and the housing has to come apart. Whatever you do, do not fold the mirror by hand to get it out of the way: on a powered mirror that strips the gear teeth and turns a reset into a replacement.
