The pivot has lost its friction. Inside the mount is a sprung bush that grips the arm, and heat and age take the tension out of it. Depending on wear we replace either the mount or the whole visor. Occasionally there is a middle route: nipping up the hex bolt in the headliner mount restores enough grip to buy a year or two, which is worth trying first.

Often, yes. The quickest fix is a plastic visor retainer clip — around R30 online — that simply hooks the visor up against the headliner. It works and it is visible, which is the trade-off. The permanent fix is replacing the pivot mount or the visor itself, and the good news is that both unclip without dropping the full headliner, so it stays a small job.

Unclip the small centre catch from the headliner first, then undo the two Torx screws at the pivot end — the heads are usually hidden behind a small trim cap that levers off. If your trim has a vanity light, disconnect the wiring plug as the mount comes away rather than pulling on it. With the right bit in hand the whole thing is a five-minute job.

New visors bought through franchised channels on the later models run into four figures, which is a lot for a piece of foam and fabric.
