The giveaway is selectivity. One or two shifts go badly wrong — harsh or flared, or slipping between specific gears — while the rest still feel entirely normal. Alongside that you may drop into limp mode with only 3rd available, and see codes such as P2707 or P0783.

It can, and usually should be. Rebuilders such as Maktrans strip it down, renew the worn solenoids, re-machine bores where they need it and put it back together — typically for half the price of new, and it lasts just as long. New is the answer only where the body is badly damaged, cracked alloy being the obvious case.

It is the clunk as the box takes up Drive or Reverse out of Park from cold. A gentle bump there is entirely normal. What is not normal is a hard bang, particularly once the gearbox is warm — that points at a worn 1-2 clutch solenoid or accumulator in the valve body, and it deserves a scan.

As an opening move, sometimes. Running a full adaptive-learning reset through Diagbox or equivalent lets the gearbox relearn its shift pressures, which can buy real time on a marginal valve body. What it cannot do is restore a worn solenoid. If the flare is back within a few weeks, you are rebuilding it.
