What Are Citroen Basalt Pressure Plate?
The pressure plate is the spring-loaded cover bolted to the flywheel that clamps the friction disc between them. Its clamping force comes from a diaphragm spring — a dished steel disc with fingers cut into the middle — and pressing the clutch pedal pushes those fingers inward, which levers the clamp off the disc. Everything about how a clutch feels comes from that diaphragm. Heat is what destroys it: a clutch that has been slipped hard gets the fingers hot enough to lose temper and distort, and once they are no longer flat the plate grips unevenly and the car judders as it pulls away.

Common Questions About Citroen Basalt Pressure Plate
How much does a Citroen pressure plate cost in South Africa?
It is normally bought as part of a kit rather than alone, and pricing is competitive locally — Valeo kits for the C5 run R3,500 to R4,500, and the Millennium kit covering the C2, Xsara and C5 is R2,895. Pro Citroen Spares and our supplier network stock both. Buying the plate separately is possible but rarely sensible, for the reason set out below.
What are the symptoms of a worn Citroen pressure plate?
Judder on take-off is the signature, and it is usually worse once the car is warm because heat is what distorted the diaphragm in the first place. Slipping under load and a burnt smell follow as the clamping force falls away. On the C3 and Xsara the cause is nearly always sustained hard clutch use rather than mileage — a city car worked hard gets there long before a highway car does.
Why is my Citroen juddering when pulling away?
Warped diaphragm fingers grip in stutters instead of progressively, so the disc grabs and releases as the plate settles. That is the common cause. The other one is contamination: oil from a weeping rear main or gearbox input seal reaching the friction face produces identical judder on a clutch that is otherwise fine. Both need the gearbox out, and if it is oil, that seal must be replaced or the new clutch goes the same way.
Can you replace just the pressure plate or do you need a full clutch kit?
Fit the full kit, every time. The plate, the friction disc and the release bearing have done identical work and are at identical points in their lives, so replacing one of three means the other two fail within a year and the gearbox comes out again. Since the labour dwarfs the parts and is the same either way, kit pricing beats piecemeal replacement by a wide margin.
How much does a Citroen clutch kit cost in SA?
Aftermarket kits for the C2, Xsara and C5 are around R2,086, with Valeo kits for the C5 at R3,500 to R4,500. Fitted at an independent, budget R5,950 to R10,500 all in. If your car has a dual-mass flywheel, have it measured while the gearbox is out and budget for the possibility of replacing it before you start rather than being surprised mid-job.
