What are the symptoms of worn Citroen bushings?

Owner forums document the same failure across the C2, C3, Xsara, C5 Aircross and C3 Aircross, and it is nearly always the same part: the rear bush in the front lower control arm, which takes the fore-and-aft braking load and is the first to collapse. Should I replace bushings with rubber or polyurethane?
For a car used daily on South African roads, standard rubber at around R150 a bush is the right answer, and that is not a cost compromise — rubber is what the suspension geometry was designed around, and it isolates road noise the way the car was meant to. Polyurethane is stiffer and lasts longer, which suits a car that is driven hard, but it transmits considerably more noise and vibration into the cabin. On a Citroen, whose whole appeal is ride quality, that is a real trade-off rather than a small one.
