The useful early check requires no tools: with the engine cold, squeeze each hose along its length. A healthy hose is firm and springs back. It is heat cycles rather than mileage that ages them, so a low-mileage car that has sat through ten summers is no better off than a high-mileage one. Replace them alongside any major cooling system work, since the labour overlaps. On the C3, keep an eye on the plastic radiator outlet too — it goes brittle and snaps before the rubber does.
