A collapsed hydraulic lash adjuster that is no longer holding oil pressure, and behind that almost always a low oil level or oil left in well past its service interval. On the 1.6 THP we also see wear on the follower pads themselves. Both are maintenance consequences rather than design faults, which is encouraging — the cure is usually cheaper than owners fear.

It varies hugely by engine, and the difference is access rather than parts. Replacing a single ticking adjuster on a 1.4 petrol is a modest job. A full rocker set on a 1.6 THP is a great deal more, because there is more to remove and the timing has to be reset afterwards. A persistent tick from the top of the engine, a rough idle, some loss of power and occasionally a misfire code against one cylinder. Confirmation is visual: with the rocker cover off, a failing rocker often sits at a noticeably different height to its neighbours, or shows a polished groove worn into the pad where it contacts the cam lobe.

Yes, and it is the root cause more often than not. Hydraulic adjusters hold valve clearance using oil pressure, so when pressure falls the adjuster collapses and the rocker begins hammering the valve instead of pressing it — which then wears the pad, the lobe and the valve tip together. Check the level weekly and change the oil every 10,000 km with the correct specification grade.
