Battery, alternator and starter motor cover the basics. Beyond that you have the engine ECU, the ignition system (coils and plugs on petrol, glow plugs on the HDi diesels), a set of sensors — oxygen, MAF, crank and cam position — plus fuses, relays, wiring harnesses and the control modules for ABS, airbags and climate. Sitting across all of it on a Citroen is the BSI, the body module that runs the network. That is the one that makes Citroen electrics feel different to work on, and the one worth understanding before you start replacing parts.

The BSI is the central body-control module — lights, locking, wipers, comfort systems and the internal network all route through it. A genuinely failing BSI shows up as several unrelated faults at once, or a car that will not wake from sleep. But before you replace one, rule out the two things that mimic it: water ingress at the scuttle or footwell, and a weak battery or bad earth. Low voltage makes healthy modules misbehave. A replacement BSI also has to be coded to your car with Lexia or DiagBox equipment, so it is not a part you simply plug in.

Most models sit between R1,500 and R3,500. A C1, C2 or C3 typically wants something in the R1,600-R2,250 band, while the larger cars and the Picassos need more capacity and run R2,400-R3,550. Stop-start models take an AGM or EFB battery, which costs more at R2,700-R4,350 but tolerates the constant cycling far better. Fitting the wrong battery type to a stop-start car is a common and expensive mistake — it will work briefly and then fail early.

Start cheap and work up. Check battery terminals for corrosion, which is common on coastal cars, and test voltage: about 12.6V with the engine off and 13.5-14.5V running. Then check the earth points, because a corroded earth causes more strange behaviour than any single component. Pull the scuttle drains and check the footwells for damp. Only after all of that is a diagnostic scan worth reading properly, because low voltage generates fault codes that disappear once the supply is healthy. Alternators typically run R2,400-R5,200, starters R1,700-R3,550 and common sensors R500-R1,750.

Somewhere between 100,000 and 150,000 km in easy use, but local conditions pull that down to roughly 80,000-120,000 km. Heat is the main enemy, dust is second, and stop-start traffic is third because the alternator spends its life recharging rather than coasting. Warning signs are the battery light, lights that dim and brighten with revs, and accessories losing power while driving. Replacements run about R2,400-R5,200 depending on model, with good aftermarket units available from around R2,200.
