Citroen C3 - Ring Gear

Citroen C3

Fast Moving

Ring Gear for C3 hatchback

By some margin the most common Citroen on South African roads. The C3 spans the French-built cars sold here before 2016 and the India-built PureTech model that relaunched the brand locally, so suspension bushes, body panels and 1.2 three-cylinder engine parts are our fastest-moving lines.

Ring Gear for C4 hatchback

The 2004-2010 C4 hatch and saloon sold steadily here and a good number are still running. Owners come to us mostly for EP6 petrol ancillaries, suspension components and the electrical modules that give trouble as these cars age.

Citroen C3 Aircross - Ring Gear

Citroen C3 Aircross

Fast Moving

Ring Gear for C3 Aircross crossover

Launched here in the 2019 relaunch and now old enough to need parts. The tall, boxy crossover body means bumpers, lights and roof fittings are common requests alongside the usual PureTech service items.

Citroen DS3 - Ring Gear

Citroen DS3

Fast Moving

Ring Gear for DS3 hatchback

Sold as a Citroen here before DS split into its own marque, the DS3 is a premium supermini with a strong following. The 1.6 THP turbo cars in particular keep us busy with timing chain kits, turbo parts and trim pieces that are hard to find new.

Citroen C4 Cactus

Fast Moving

Ring Gear for C4 Cactus crossover

A 2016 South African Car of the Year finalist that arrived just as Citroen was leaving the market, so the local run was short. Those distinctive ribbed Airbump side panels are the single most requested body part we handle for it.

Ring Gear for Berlingo van

The long-running Berlingo panel van and leisure activity vehicle did steady trade work in South Africa. Hard-working vehicles wear out clutches, suspension and sliding-door gear, and diesel owners come to us for HDi injection and turbo parts.

What Are Ring Gear?

The ring gear is the toothed ring around the outer edge of the flywheel, and it exists solely so the starter motor has something to grab. The starter pinion flies out, meshes with those teeth, spins the engine and retracts. Two things about that arrangement explain nearly every ring gear failure. First, wear is never even β€” an engine tends to stop in a few preferred positions, so the same handful of teeth meet the pinion thousands of times. Second, damage almost always originates with the starter: a tired Bendix or a slow solenoid slams the pinion into the teeth instead of meshing cleanly.

Signs You Need New Ring Gear

A grinding or crunching as you turn the key
The starter spinning freely without turning the engine at all
Starting cleanly on some attempts and grinding on others
A high-pitched whine right as the engine catches
Chipped, hooked or missing teeth visible through the starter aperture
Repeated attempts needed to restart a hot engine

Common Questions About Ring Gear

What are the symptoms of a worn Citroen starter ring gear?

Grinding on start, the starter spinning without engaging, and a crunch as the pinion meets a damaged tooth. The diagnostic detail is intermittency: if it only happens sometimes, the wear is confined to one section of the ring, and whether you get a clean start depends on where the engine happened to stop. That pattern is close to conclusive.

Can you replace just the ring gear or do you need a new flywheel?

On the older Citroens, where the ring is heat-shrunk onto the flywheel, a machinist can press the old one off and shrink a new one on β€” established work, and cheaper than a flywheel. On a modern dual-mass flywheel that route does not exist and the whole assembly is replaced. Which applies to you depends on the engine, so send the code and we will tell you before you order.

How much does a Citroen ring gear cost in South Africa?

It depends entirely on whether you are buying a bare ring or a complete flywheel. Ask through our form with the engine code and we will price both β€” and be aware that a good used flywheel with a sound ring gear frequently comes in below a new ring plus the machining labour to fit it, which surprises most owners.

Why does my Citroen starter make a grinding noise?

Either the pinion is meshing with damaged ring gear teeth, or the Bendix spring in the starter has weakened and is letting the pinion stay extended after the engine fires. Those are different repairs with different costs, and you cannot tell them apart by ear. Pull the starter and inspect both the pinion teeth and the ring through the aperture before ordering anything.

Should I replace the starter motor when replacing a ring gear?

In almost every case, yes β€” because the starter is usually what caused the damage. A worn Bendix or a sluggish solenoid hammers the pinion into the ring instead of engaging it smoothly, and fitting a fresh ring gear behind that same starter simply restarts the process. Since getting to the ring gear means removing the gearbox, doing it twice is an expensive way to save on a starter.
