There is a widely used owner procedure for the older PSA automatics: with the engine running and your foot firmly on the brake, select first, hold for about five seconds, return to neutral, then to park. It lets the gearbox ECU relearn its shift points and can settle minor niggles. Be realistic about what it fixes, though. If the box is flaring, slipping or banging into gear, a relearn will not repair worn solenoids or a tired valve body, and continuing to drive it that way makes the eventual repair bigger.

More easily than the local Citroen parc alone would suggest, because Citroen shares gearboxes with Peugeot across almost the whole range. The MA5, BE4, ML6C and AL4 are all common units here catalogued under both marques, so clutch kits, mounts, driveshafts and complete boxes turn up regularly. On manuals, clutch wear from heavy traffic, and dual-mass flywheel rattle on the diesels from roughly 120,000 km. On automatics, the AL4 four-speed accounts for most complaints, nearly always valve body and solenoid wear showing up as harsh or slipping shifts. CV joints click on full lock once the boot has split and let grit in, which is a cheap repair if caught before the joint is ruined. Budget somewhere between R1,200 and R8,500 for most individual components.

Typically R6,500-R12,000 all in for a petrol car, covering the disc, pressure plate, release bearing and the labour to split the box. The number moves sharply on the HDi diesels, because those use a dual-mass flywheel that should be replaced rather than resurfaced, which can push the job past R15,000. The smaller cars like the C1, C2 and C3 use a conventional single-mass clutch and sit at the affordable end. Ask for parts and labour quoted separately so you can compare properly.

Roughly every 60,000 km on a manual. On the AL4 automatic, ignore the fill-for-life label — service the fluid and filter, because neglected fluid is the documented reason these boxes fail. Somewhere around 60,000-80,000 km is sensible, and sooner if the car lives in traffic. Heat is what degrades it, and Gauteng stop-start plus summer temperatures is about the worst case. A fluid and filter service runs R1,800-R3,500 and is cheap next to a reconditioned gearbox.
